0 This Boy Turned Docile before Drowning

Prolog: Seven teenage-boys from Liwa, the neighboring town of Krui, drowned in the sea of Labuhan Jukung while they were playing a ball in the water. Five of them could be saved thank to the local people and a tourist surfer, while two others, Dika (16) and Bima (17) drowned to death and lost in the sea. The bodies of Dika and Bima were found afloating in the sea two days later by local fishermen.

The family of Dika Rinaldi didn’t have any kind of premonition prior to the accident. However, about three days before he drowned, Dika, who used to be a lazy boy and was annoying to his siblings turned helpful, docile, and obedient to his parents, said Juwarni, Dika’s auntie to Lampung Post at Pantai Labuhan Jukung (Krui town).

The behavior of this teenager who had just passed secondary school and had just been accepted at high school changed drastically.

“He told his parents that he would like to go to Krui with his friends just to have some fun. It is the first time he went to Krui, and he was very enthusiastic” said the auntie.

And according to his grandma, Dika made his own money to fare for a trip to Krui. He worked as a manol (a person employed to carry burden). He carried away coffee from the farms to the farmers' house in the village. “He was so recalcitrant, but out of the blue, he turned nice and docile. We really didn’t take any clue that he is going to pass away.”

The boy dreamed so much to be able to go to Krui. He was willing to work hard to get the money for the trip.

“When his father was going to Suwoh, he told him to take care. He didn’t use to say goodbye and gave a handshake to his family and friends before leaving, but this time he did.”

Daliyem also said that her family and her neighbors came down to Krui to check as the SAR team kept on looking for the drowned boys in the sea. “We keep on saying a prayer to God. We hope that he’s OK and can be found,” she said.

0 Krui Is Now A New-Established County

Krui and all the area in its coastlines is now a new-established county, apart from Lampung Barat its mother county, according to the legislation that was ratified by the National Parliament in Jakarta, Oct 25, 2012, after being struggle for its establishment for ten years.  The name of the new county is Kabupaten Pesisir Barat (West Coast County) and is still part of Lampung Province.

The area of Kabupaten Pesisir Barat includes all the coastal sides along the coastlines, from Lemong up north where Jimmy is down Bengkunat Belimbing in the very tip of Sumatera down south.

Krui dalam persiapannya menjadi Kabupaten Baru di Lampung
Map of Kabupaten Pesisir Barat
It’s a big moment for Krui people. Being independent and having their own local government is a dream comes true for all the people in the area. While there is always a chance for this area to be established as a different county and has its own local government, but the effort seemed to have been harder since the SBY administratives was to restrict all the establishments of new county.

Actually, Krui people has appealed for their own established-county, separated from Lampung Barat, since 2002. And the parliament in Jakarta has issued a bill proposing its establishment to be ratified into legislation since 2008. But after years of hard struggle the bill is only at last passed in this late October, 2012.

By having its own local government, Krui people are now hopeful that all of the county’s potentials can be explored and exploited to the maximum for the welfare of the local people. Indeed this county has a lot of resources that need to be examined. The natural resources like the forest and the sea need a better management so it can procure more incomes to develop the county as well as the people.

Krui people believe that only by having their own government this all potentials can be better managed and better exploited. Krui people is now expecting some good and well dedicated people to run a good governance in this county so as to bring the county to a betterment in the future.

0 Surfer Flown to Singapore after A Spinal Injury

Repro: Radar Lambar

A Cassa King Oppayer (probably CASA King Air) was flown from Jakarta and landed on Krui airport on September 4, 2012, at about 9:30 in the morning.

The airplane was to pickup Barnt (25) an Australian surfer who injured himself while he was surfing in the town of Krui.

The manager of Villa Desa surf camp at Way Redak, Krui town, Ani, said that the plane was coming to pickup one of his customer.

“The airplane was flown from Jakarta to pickup Barnt (25) an Australian surfer who suffered from spinal injury while he was surfing Krui Left, Monday, September 3, 2012, at about 11:00. He may have fallen off and broken his spine,” she said.

She also said that Barnt would be flown to Singapore for a better care right away as soon as the plane arrives in Jakarta. “Some of Barnt’s stuff was still left behind because the airplane is not allowed to take excess baggage,” she added.

One of the airport staff said that Krui airport hasn’t actually got an operational licence for flight, yet the airplane has a licence to land because it has to pickup an injury man.

“The airplane has a licence from Jakarta to land at Krui airport only to pickup the injury man,” he added.

0 Idul Fitri 2012

As usual, when Ramadan finishes, the Idul Fitri comes and Krui is packed with a lot of local tourists who come from every neighboring districts around the town. Coastal side of Krui is the most favorite picnic destination for people who live in the mountain side around Krui for the beaches around here are all beautiful.

And so is this year. Since Ramadan finishes at August 18, 2012, local tourists started the downpour to Krui from August 19, and only lasted after three or four days. On the first day of Ramadan, August 19, the flows of traffic weren’t so heavy yet. But on the second day, the torrents of bikes were so heavy and continuous that you have to wait for a few minutes before it was clear enough to cross the road, and on the third day, the traffic was even heavier with mostly motorbikes.

While the traffics were full of bikes, the beaches were packed with people. Wherever you go, you’ll see beaches packed with a lot of local tourists. But, however, the surfs weren’t very good in the last few days and there was hardly any surfers seen in the surf. And if you don’t like being in a beach that packed with local people, then it’s the right time for you to stay away and nest in your surf camp and wish that it will last soon.

Next year Idul Fitri will come on about August 9 or 10.

0 Ding Repair

If your surf board is not made of rubber, there is chance it will get broken while you are surfing. As far as I am concerned, some surfers broke their board a little, some others got their boards snapped into two pieces. And if you don’t have a spare board, or if your spare board has been broken since your very first day in Krui, then it’s all over. No matter how much you cry, the boards will not recover by themselves.

The good news is there is a ding repair that can fix your broken boards at Karang Nyimbur. No matter how bad they were broken, the ding repairman can fix it. Just bring your broken boards to this man and let him do his job, and you will be in the water again for the next big days.

It will take one to three days for this man to finish repairing your board, depending on the condition of the board. If it just has a little ding, it will take only a day, but if it’s snapped into two pieces, it will take three days. And the cost is vary from less than 100.000 rupiah for a minor injury to 400.000 rupiah if your board snapped into two pieces.

If you stay at Karang Nyimbur, this ding repair hut is on your nose; you’ll pass this hut on your way to the surf. But if you stay in town, you’ll have to ride your bike about 22 km down south to see this repairman. Have a nice day.

0 Australian Surfer Flown to Singapore for A Better Care

Photo; Lampung Post

KRUI (Lampost): Due to lack of medical equipments at Krui hospitals, Mc Leon Done Gordon (25) an Australian surfer, was flown  abroad for a better medical care from Krui airport, on Friday, June 22, 2012. Mc Leon hit the reef and broke his thigh bone while he was surfing Way Jambu, the next surf after Karang Nyimbur, the other day.

According Ani (37) the manager of Ombak Indah, the camp where Mc Leon was staying, Mc Leon was flown to Singapore for a better treatment.

“This is the second time a surfer flown abroad from Krui airport after having a fatal accident,” said Ani to Lampung Post at the airport, when the flight was about to take off.

She said that the airplane is chartered by the insurance company that covers Mc Leon’s travel in Indonesia.

Amir, a medical officer at the Health Center (Puskesmas) in Pesisir Selatan, who was also coming to the airport, said that they had given Mc Leon a treatment prior to the flight. However, due to the lack of medical equipments, and the serious injury, they couldn’t do much to help him.

“He broke his left thigh bone. He needs an advance medical treatment like an X-ray, which we don’t have,” he said.

0 This ATM Can Take Your Master Cards

Now there are two ATM booths in Krui. The first one started last year, and the second one has just started now. The first one located at Bank Lampung, Pasar Krui, right next to a convenient store, Indo Maret, while the second one is located a bit past the market, at Bank BRI, Kota Krui. The first one is closer to the Krui Left, and while it is located by a store, it is more practical for local people to cash some money before  shopping. But I am not so sure that this ATM can take your foreign card like Master Card, or others.

But the second one, the one that located at Bank BRI, is more international. Though I’ve never seen a foreigner cash their account there yet, but there are signs that this ATM can take your international cards like Master Card, Cirrus, Bankcard, etc. And if your card is compatible to one of those, why not try to withdraw some cash here, so you don’t have to venture an arduous journey to go to Liwa the next town anymore. And remember, you must have some money left in your account. I heard that ATM cards are useless unless you have some credit left in your account. Have a nice day.

0 It Was Small This Evening

Both Krui Left and Krui Right was small this morning, but I saw some surfers surfing Krui Left, though there wasn’t anybody at The Right. And when I checked The Peak, it was small too, but The Leftover, the surf next to The Peak, was not very small. I saw two body boarders surfing The Leftover. A surfer that I met at the beach told me that Karang Nyimbur was big this morning, and there was about 20 surfers there, and so was Mandiri.

When I came back later in the evening, both Krui Left and Krui Right was still small, but the beach was packed with locals and kids swimming in the sea. There wasn’t any surfers at the surf, but there were some whities walking at the beach.

When I saw these four guys swimming at the beach break in between The Left and The Right, I thought they were just another local tourists as usual. Only when I saw their bikes parked by the beach did I realized that they were the surfers that I met the other day. They were good surfers though, but since the surfs were small they swam instead. Why not.

0 Wild Wild Sea

This is how the surf in Krui is like when the sea runs wild. The sea runs wild because of bad weather condition. Strong offshore wind makes the sea choppy and dangerous. And when this happens nobody dare to surf, and no fisherman of any kind dare to go fishing.

Strong wind can cause damage to people property. Fish becomes rare and expensive, trees fall down, and some house roofs get blown away. Trees that fall down into power masks can cause black out too. And if this happens everyday, it may turn into disaster.

About three days ago, I heard that a ship sunk somewhere in Bengkunat, Belimbing. According to the news, one of the ship’s crew was able to save his life, while 19 others were reported as missing. This is not the first time ship strands in Krui shores due to bad weather condition.

Strong winds usually strike Krui in December to January, but this year, it still comes in March. However, at the end of February till earlier March, the surfs were good.

Pictures above were taken on March 11, 2012.

0 Bad Weather, Bad Luck

Bad weather makes bad luck. The sea runs wild with big waves. The winds blow strong and heavy. And the rains come torential. This condition causes many disasters. The ships sink. The fishing boats capsize. The trees fall down. And the land slide. ….

When the sea runs amuck. Fishermen hold back. Surfers wait and see, and long line ships seek a safe place for refuge. Nobody dare enough to go challenge the wild sea. Even fishermen who have been going to the sea their whole life stay await on shore.

Bad weather is a hard time for fishermen. And when it lasts quite long, it can leads to famine disaster for some exclusive fishermen who cannot do anything for their living other than going to the sea. In fact, bad weather is hard for the whole community since they can hardly get any fish, even with a sky rocketing price.

When the sea of Krui, South Sumatera, runs wild, it often takes its toll too. Many ships were blown ashore by strong winds. And some of them could not be released and were demolished by the owner. Some others just stayed there until they were decay in time.

This large barge that takes about 8.000 cubic of log went aground at the sea shore of Krui bay, January 25, after four days sailing in the sea. The captain of the tug boat that drags the barge said that the bad weather condition and big waves was all to blame.

“The string that connects the tug boat with the barge was snapped,” he said. “That’s why the barge releases and sways and goes aground.”

The barge started from Siberut island in north Sumatera, heading for Surabaya.

The tug boat that drags the barge has 11 crew members, including the captain.

Krui airport will hold regular flight starting January 2012 as Susi Air, the airline that will hold regular flight from Jakarta to Krui, and vice versa, confirms that they are ready for undertaking the flights.

Beside holding passenger flights, Susi Air will also hold cargo flights, transporting farm industry products of Krui, whether domestically or internationally.

In the years to come, the local government of Lampung Barat will give financial assistance so as to make the flight affordable for ordinary people. As reported before, Susi Air charges Rp.1.100.000 for a flight from Jakarta to Krui, and vice versa, which is considered to expensive for local Krui people.

Hopefully, Krui airport, which is 50 hectares in width according to current data, will become a bridge for the region to develop its industry, whether tourism industry, farming industry, or fishing industry.

0 Learn to Surf 5: Jay and Rhys

It was December. The sea ran wild. The tide was high. Krui Left worked but not very big. However, the beach break in between Krui Left and Krui Right was big enough, and so was the Right.

There were not many surfers left. December is the very end of the season. The peak of the season is usually from March to October. However, you still can see some surfers for the rest of the months.

And there wasn’t anybody in the water this morning but Jay and Rhys. They both took the shorebreaks between the Left and the Right. I saw Jay just hung out on his board by the seashore. He looked like enjoying being swung up and down by the waves. He didn’t try to take the waves that consistently came around him. Meanwhile, a stone throw away, Rhys looked busy handling the surfs. He looked like enjoying the shorebreaks very much. He tried to ride more and more waves that come one after another. He rode on  his board up and down.

Not long afterward, Jay came out of the water. he said something to Rhys. He let him know that he was coming out.

“Hello Mister. What’s your name?” I asked.

“Jay.”

“Are you learning how to surf?”

“Oh, No. He is,” he said, pointing to Rhys that was left in the water.

“How is the surf going as of late?”

“It was big at the Beach Break. We surfed there yesterday” (The beach break here means Mandiri beach Break, about 10 km south.)

“Oh, I see. I am learning to take photographs,” I said

“Yeah, that’s good for your blog.”

I was taken aback. How in the world does he know that I’ve got a blog.

“How do you know that I’ve got a blog?”

“You told me the other day.”

Oh, my gosh. Now I remember that I’ve talked to them before, in the camp where they were staying. This is not the first time I experience something like this. I talked to some whities and I asked their name again when I met them the other day as though I’ve never met them before. Fortunately, those white people always remember the meeting, and when we meet again, they recognize me first before I asked their name again.

“Oh, I see. Sorry I forget that we’ve met,” I said.

“But I forget the name of your blog. You need to write it down. You’ve got a pen?” he asked.

“No. Just remember. It’s H-A-S-I-M, apostrophe ‘S’ SPACE,”. If you google it, you can’t miss it,” I explained.

He nodded.

0 No Visibility

There is not much you can do in Krui on December. The surfs are not just as regular as the other months. Krui Left that was very good from March to October doesn’t turn very good today, and so are the other spots. However, still you can surf sometime. “It’s not very good down here, but it was good at the other side the other day,” said Louis, a surfer who I met this morning when I asked him how Krui Left was.

Instead of surfing, Louis went diving at Krui Left this morning with a pair of large flippers and a spear gun in his hands. I saw him up and down the water by the surfs. The Left was small and there is nobody in there. And he came out of the water empty handed.

“How’s it going?” I asked.

“Not very good. No visibility.”

“How deep did you go?”

“About thirty feet.”

“I saw a man with a spear gun in the other side. He dived about five meters down. He got big fish,” I said.

“Yes, it’s much more clear down there,” he replied.

0 Learn to Surf 4: Lydia

Lydia, a British citizen, came to Krui unintentionally. She flew from Malaysia to Jakarta with the intention to tour Indonesia. First, she planned to do Sumatra. She took a bus from Jakarta to Sumatra, but unfortunately, she was stranded in Bandarlampung. A local man in Bandarlampung told her that she was too late for the bus to Padang, and offered her a drive to Krui instead. Lydia didn’t know much about Krui, but a glance at the map. However, she took it a deal when the man showed her his car, and hit the road to Krui right away.

“The driver seemed not to know Krui either. I think he never been to Krui before. He pulled off and asked the local for directions,” she said. “He took his son with him, who kept sleeping all the way from Bandarlampung to Krui. I wonder why he took him along.”

“For a companion,” I replied.

I guessed it is true that the driver might not have been to Krui before. He agreed to drive her to Krui for that lower than usual price because he himself wanted to see Krui. He killed two birds with one stone; he could come to Krui, and he got some money. Smart.

Arriving in Krui in the evening, Lydia felt a bit disappointed. A long way to ride, and she felt like being screw by the driver. “Did I pay too much?” she asked. “Not really, because there was only you in the car,” I replied.

And when the morning came, she didn’t know what to do. She sat in the lobby of the hotel reading a book.

“The manager of the hotel offers you a free ride around Krui if you like,” I said to her.

Yes, the manager of the hotel is a very kind person. He likes to offer the new comers who stay at his hotel a free ride with his car whenever he has time. Whenever he gets a newbie staying in his hotel, he offers them a free ride around. If you come to Krui, and you don’t know how to get around, or you don’t have any idea what to do yet, you’d better stay in his hotel. He will be glad to help you. And if he has free time, he will surely offer you a ride, too.

“Yeah? I don’t mind chartering,” she replied, turning her head, raising her eyebrows above her reading glasses. She looked interested. Her face glows. It looked like a silver lining in a cloud.

But an offer is an offer. Once you offer something for free, you offer it for free. You cannot change your mind just because she agrees to pay.

And so we hit the road to take a look around. First, we went to Karang Nyimbur where the surf camps are.

“This is about the end of season,” I said. “The number of surfers drops down, and the surfs are smaller. By the way, do you surf?”

“No,” she replied. “I wonder if someone can teach me how to surf.”

“It’s easy,” I said. “We will find someone who can teach you how to surf.”

In Karang Nyimbur, we stopped at Albert’s hut which sells surfing gears, but unfortunately, Albert wasn’t available. The manager called him, asking whether he could let a surf board for rent and teach someone to surf for the day.

“OK. But I cannot teach someone to surf at Karang Nyimbur. I can do it in town instead. Karang Nyimbur surfs are not just suitable for learning,” he said.

And so we drove back to town to meet Albert.

It took us quite a while to get to Krui town surfs because we stopped at Mandiri Beach to take a look and have something to eat.

“I don’t mind later,” Lydia said. So we enjoyed the time and took some fresh air for a while. It was a regular work day, but there were some people coming with cars and a bus to the beach. Judging from the numbers of their cars, they must have been from far away.

We arrived at Krui surfs at about two o’clock. Albert has been waiting for us by the beach with two surf boards resting at his bike.

So as not two waste more time, he grabbed Lydia from us and went straight away to the beach breaks where people usually take their surf lessons. Lydia didn’t even change her dress. She was not ready to surf, really.

Lydia seemed to have a time of her life. She enjoyed the surf lesson very much. I could hear her screaming and hooting hysterically whenever she got a ride on her board. The surf lesson seemed to change her mood drastically, as she never looked that happy since the morning. They stayed in the water until evening.

“How was the surf?,” I asked later at the night.

“It’s fun,” he said. “We will do it again tomorrow.”
