Simple Sentence, Compund Sentence, Complex Sentence, dan Compund-Complex Sentence

SECARA GRAMATIKAL, kalimat bisa diklasifikasikan sebagai simple sentence (kalimat sederhana), compound sentence (kalimat majemuk), complex sentence (kalimat kompleks), dan compound-complex sentence (kalimat majemuk kompleks ( majemuk bertingkat)).

Simple sentences

Sebuah simple sentence terdiri dari satu independent clause (induk kalimat) dan tidak mempunyai dependent clause (anak kalimat).

Contoh

-         The trailer is surrounded by wooden deck.

Compound sentences

Sebuah compound sentence terdiri dari dua atau lebih independent clause (induk kalimat) dan tidak mempunyai anak kalimat. Kedua independent clause tersebut bisa dipisahkan oleh koma dan sebuah kata penghubung (and, but, or, nor, for, so, yet) atau oleh sebuah semi colon (tanda titik koma).

Contoh

-         Occasionally the car goes up the dirt trail, and dust flies everywhere.

Complex sentences

Sebuah complex sentence terdiri dari satu independent clause dan sekurangnya satu dependent clause.

Contoh

- Many people believe  that anyone can earn a living.

Compound-complex sentence

Sebuah compound complex sentence terdiri dari dua atau lebih independent clause dan sekurangnya satu dependent clause.

1.      I complimented Joe when he finished the job, and he seemed pleased.

2.      Sister Lucy tried her best to help Martin, but he was an undisciplined boy who drove many teachers to despair.

           

Keterangan: Warna biru adalah independent clause, warna oranye adalah dependent clause.

Menurut fungsinya, kalimat bisa diklasifikasikan sebagai declarative (kalimat pernyataan), interrogative (kalimat tanya), imperative (kalimat perintah), atau exclamatory (kalimat seruan).

Declarative       : He sings with the Grace Church Boys Choir.

Interrogative     : How long has he sung with them?

Imperative        : Comb his hair before the performance starts.

Exclamatory     : What voices those boys have!
