'No Swimming' sign |
Local people believe that the seas of Krui—the lineup of seas between Krui town to Mandiri beach—is kind of supernatural seas for they always take their tolls every year.
Yes, almost every year people—mostly from mountain sides like Liwa, Ranau, Sumberjaya, etc—and sometimes local people of Krui—get drowned and die in the seas.
What cause people get drowned and die there is always a vexed issue for local people to talk to—thousand of theories and presumptions have been put forward as hypothesis or merely as a joke.
People just wonder why this happen. What causes people drowned there is beyond logic—thing that cannot make a common sense. Some people got drowned not only because they swam when the sea was junk but also when they are calm down, while others got drowned when they were just walking calmly on the beach and simply grabbed by the shorebreaks.
What make it even more bizarre is that this happen mostly in Idul Fitri or Lebaran Day. And so is this year. Last September 12, a girl from Ranau (a mountain side town by the Ranau lake, pass Liwa) got drowned in Mandiri sea (a surf spot, about 10 km from Krui town center) while his cousin who was trying to save her was severely injured.
This girl is not the first and only victims. Many such victims took places in yesteryears. Common sea spots renowned for the death tolls are Pantai Labuhan Jukung (Krui lefts), Pantai Way Redak, and Pantai Mandiri (Mandiri Beach).***
