The result of quick count yesterday showed that SBY-Boediono won hands down in the presidential election, July 8, 2009. Nine out of ten Survey Institutions in Indonesia resulted SBY-Boediono as the unequivocal winner while only one of them booked Mega-Prabowo as the winner. The numbers showed that SBY-Boediono undisputedly drubbed the other two couples. SBY-Boediono grabbed more than 50% votes in 25 provinces out of totally 33 provinces in Indonesia, more than enough to make the election over in one round only (according to Indonesian constitution, presidential election finishes in one round only if one candidate win 50% vote + 1, with more than 20% votes in 17 provinces). Astonishingly, more than just enough to win, SBY-Boediono not only got 20% votes in 17 provinces, but far more than that, he got the average of 58% votes in 25 provinces—a record that nobody has expected so far. And hard to believe, the couple got 93% votes in Aceh province (NAD). We know that Aceh province is the battle of war between SBY and JK (Jusuf Kalla) which JK was more in favor to win the votes. In the campaign prior to the election, JK always boasted that it was him who managed for a peaceful settlement in Aceh, and as he said, he did it as quick. But anyway, Aceh people think different.

SBY-Boediono victory is a result of years maintaining cool images, accumulation of sympathy, ways of maintaining good composure, and of course, popular policies that lead him by far the most popular among the other two. The way SBY maintained his composure among thousands of opponent assaults into his political policies has gained people sympathy in its most concrete form. We know that if you attack someone severely and radically, then the people sympathy will go to your opponent. It doesn’t matter who’s right and who’s wrong in this case. It’s the way that you play the game that counts. And during the campaign, SBY was merely on the position of defense, the way that so potential to win people favor.
Besides, his popular policies is also a factor. Even though the number of poor people is still a significant issue that can possibly turn him down, but the schemes of relief for poor people like BLT (cash aids), PNPM (project aids), decrement of fuel prices, free medical care, and fee school program are pretty much counts for his records.
On the other hand, his commitment to fight against corruptions has been so far taken the people’s breath away. In the past, nobody expected a top beaurocrate could be jailed. While nowadays, everybody can be thrown into jail, not only a lower level officer, but also a chief of a district, a governor, a top brass army. Even the father of his daughter in law got jailed.
And last but not least, is the appearance. It’s undeniable and undebatable that appearance is big factor to win the presidential election in Indonesia. Distinguished from other candidates, SBY is a representation of an ideal president that most Indonesian people dream to have. He is tall and big, not too much different from his counterparts in western countries. Indonesian people are often ashamed when they saw their petty president handshaked his American counterpart or having a pose for a picture with them.***
