The Mystic Cave of Matu

THE MATU CAVE or Gua Matu is a cave located in Way Sindi, Krui, Lampung Barat, Indonesia. One of the mouth of this cave is located by the beach. For Krui people, Matu cave is more than just a mere cave, it is a dwelling place of divine spirits. Krui people believe that the cave is a symbol of ‘another society’; an invisible society beyond the real world. Many mystic stories as well as mystic rituals associated with this cave. Most Krui people know this cave, not because they have been there, but because of the mystic stories and rituals told by words of mouth. On the other hand, Matu cave and the zone around is a very beautiful place for a sightseeing.

Entering Matu cave, you must maintain your behave. Do not abuse the cave. Do not say a swearword. Do not do something indecent. Do not pee nor shit in the cave. Do not answer with contumely what local people say about the cave. Do not litter in the cave, nor take anything from the cave. And do not look down upon what local people believe in regarding the cave. Otherwise, according to what local people believe, you will be sorry and get out of the cave unsaved

There’s nothing to see in the cave but thousands of bats maneuvering by the ceiling of the cave, dropping their droppings on your head. The furthest you can get into the cave is about ten meters. Then you likely to hold back because the corridors are getting lower and smaller that you cannot stand up.
