Ramadan in Krui

People gathering at the stand of es buah (chopped fruits with rocks) for fast
breaking starter, while on the road other people are riding around by bikes,
waiting for fast breaking time to come. The Ramadan atmosphere
in Krui is fun and gaily.
Ramadan is the holy month for Moslem people. It is the month when Moslem people have to fast during the day time. In Ramadan people not only to hold back their appetite for good food, but also to restraint from doing something bad like getting mad, saying swear words, or talking bullshit about others.

In Krui, Ramadan is also special. It is the month of joyful and gaily atmosphere. Early at about three o’clock in the morning people have to wake up for early morning meal  (called sahoor in Bahasa), while at about sunset they have to gather back at home for fast breaking (buka puasa). And early at night, at about 7.30 p.m, they have to go to mosque for Ramadhan prayer (tarawih).

Early in Ramadan, mosques are usually overcrowded with tarawih enthusiasts, but later near the end of the month, the crowd is becoming less and less.

Late in the afternoon, at about four o’clock p.m., you can see people riding around in the main road by bikes. They do nothing but wasting the time, waiting for the sunset, the fast breaking time (we call this nyore in Bahasa).

Some people looks for something special for fast breaking starters like es buah (chopped fruits with rocks), or other cold drinks. But, however, the most popular fast breaking dessert is kolak (compote). Kolak is like fruit cooked with coconut oil. The most common fruit for kolak is banana and kolang kaling (sugar palm fruit).
