This lowly seaweed is called ‘kersing’ in Indonesian, and
‘ghesing’ in Lampungese (local) language. Krui people just has begun harvesting
this weed this year. In the past, nobody cared about this common shallow sea
flora which grow easily in every reefs along the seashore. People didn’t have
any idea what to do with them.
But now this weed is popular and in great demand. More and
more people gathering this weed today as the price is rising. If you come to
Krui beach, you may see people gathering this weed and dry them under the sun
by the beach.
However, it takes two or three days until it dry and ready
to be sold, and if the day is overcast, it will take more days. It’s a hard
work though, but it pays them back for the price is quite reasonable. Today, dry
kersing cost Rp.1,400, so if someone
can collect 50 kg of dry kersing
everyday, he can earn Rp.70,000 a day. Say he can only collect 25 kg so then he
can earn Rp.35,000. Still, it’s enough to cover the daily need of a simple
family.
