Marching Contest

Marching contest is a yearly event held in order to commemorate Indonesian Independence Day in Kecamatan Pesisir Tengah (Pesisir tengah sub-county), Krui, South Sumatera, Indonesia, beside sport contests and Lomba Panjat Pinang (areca nut tree climbing contest). As the Independence Day is on August 17, this event usually takes place in August, two or three days before the D-day. But since August this year coincidentally occur at the same time as Ramadhan, the fasting month,  the event is moved forward to July.

The contestants are all school students, ranging from elementary school to senior high school. One school can have more than one marching team to take part in the contest.

Since Kecamatan Pesisir Tengah, Krui, is now divided into three sub-counties (Kecamatan Pesisir Tengah, Kecamatan Way Krui, and Kecamatan Krui Selatan) the contestant teams today are not as many as those in the years before because, consequently, Kecamatan Way Krui and Kecamatan Krui Selatan cannot take part in this event anymore since they are now different sub-counties.

Anyway, the event is interesting to see. Watching school students march in different variation of styles is a sight for sore eyes although the cars, motorbikes, and lorries that go to and fro, mixed with the students, are pains in the eyes.
