A friend of mine came to me the other day, asking whether I could translate an old English hand writing document in her hand. She was given a photo copy of what may have been the document of Honble English East India Company by her ancestors. She said that her grandparents asked her for translating the document into Indonesian. The document that dated back in September 1758 puzzles me a lot and makes me confused. And the hand writing style baffles me even more.
The document that may have been about an Agreement between the Honble English East India Company and the local rajah of Pugung in cultivating and maintaining pepper plantation in the area contains many words that I don’t recognize. Some of the words written in that intricate handwriting is may refer to local (Pugung) terms in their traditional way of life. However, most of the strange words that I don’t recognize may belong to English or other European words.
I tried to translate the document on my own words, ignoring those strange words. I think I can take the gist of the document, the outline that tells the most important points of the agreement. However, it’s not unlikely that I made a lot of mistakes, which can lead the people who read it into misunderstanding.
Would you readers who knows archaic English please help me translating this document. And it would be more interesting if you could recognize the document, and some info about it.
Note: Poogong as written in this document may refer to a place names Pugung. Pugung today is a tourist destination for surfing. I live about 50 km from this place.
