Mitch is very keen on spear-gun fishing. When he is not surfing, he goes fishing with his double-arms-length spear gun. Today he catches two big parrot fish and one coral fish at the Peak. The parrot fish are big enough to feed the whole family, let alone plus a coral fish. “No, we gonna grill them for BBQ tonight. There are six of us,” his friend said when a local man asked whether he wants to sell them for some cash. “We’re leaving tomorrow. Tonight is our farewell party,” he added.
Mitch didn’t take much time to catch the fish. When I met him, he just got out of the water with the green coral fish. “How was it, Mike?” I asked. “It’s just so-so. I’ve just caught one fish,” he replied. My eyes caught a big green coral fish lying on the sand.
Then he adjusted his spear gun and put his wet suit again, and back to the water. I talked to his friend who operated the video camera, filming their friends riding the Peak. I didn’t know what he did in the water. But it wasn’t long after he was out of my view, then he came back with two big parrot fish hanging on his hip. His friend shot him with his video camera, and I took a snap-shot with my pocket camera.
“They are big, Man,” I said overwhelmingly.
“Yeah,” reply.
“How deep?”
“About four and a half meter.”
It’s not easy to catch that big fish with spear gun, you know. You’ve got to be well-trained. Many spear gun men come home empty handed. And besides, the spear gun itself has to be cool enough. Hand made spear-guns like local people use are not effective enough to catch that big fish.
And when the surfs are not on, and if you want to kill your spare time going fishing with spear-gun, you’ll have to learn from Mitch since he has gone fishing with spear-gun since he was ten. But you’ll have to wait until he come back from Australia . May be next year.
Bye Mitch. See you next year. ***
