Coconut Picking

Watching someone picking coconuts is another attraction that you can see when the surfs are not on. Like what Frank dan Nick did this morning. Frank and Nick came out of their compound when they heard the sounds of coconuts bumped onto the earth. They were blown away by how agile the man climbed the tall coconut trees and picked the coconuts.

Nick who looks pretty much like Andy, the American guy who was deported, especially when his sunglasses are on, amazed so much by what he was seeing.

I was taken aback for his resemblance with Andy. When I saw him for the first time, I thought he was Andy’s brother or something. “No. I am Australian. He is American,” he said.

“Can you climb coconut trees?” I asked Nick.

“No, no way,” he replied. His face upturned, looking at the man up on the tree.

“Are there coconut trees in Australia?”

“Yes, but they are not as high.”

“When I was in Bali. I heard someone dies falling from a coconut tree,” he said.

“Yes, I heard many people die from coconut trees here, too,” I replied.

“What do people do with the coconut husks?” asked Frank.

“They make, sofas, mats, and many things. You can see the coconut husks industry in Marang,” I replied. (Marang is a small town, about fifty kilometers south of Krui, pass Way Jambu, the Sumatran Pipeline).

“They don’t use them for cooking fire?”

“No. The fire won’t last long with coconut husks.”

He nodded.

Climbing coconut is not at all easy. It takes guts. Moreover, the old coconut trees gan get up to 30 meters high. If you are kind of nervous people and afraid of height, then you’d better have someone do it for you. The man in this picture didn’t climb his own trees. He was asked by the owner of the trees to do the picking.

Many coconut farmers do not pick their own coconuts. They are afraid. They them picked.

The coconut pickers usually pick coconuts for some money. However, they may do it for some share of coconuts as well.

In some other areas, farmers let their monkeys do the picking.

Well trained monkeys can pick coconut much more effectively than a human being. But you have to train them for a long time before you can let them do it for you.

If you come to Krui, and you can climb coconut trees, why don’t you help coconut farmers picking their coconuts, too. ***
